Insurable interest

Principle that establishes that the insurance policy beneficiary must have the probability of suffering a genuine loss or damage in case the event for which they are insured occurs.

Social Security disability income

The United States government program that provides monthly income benefits to individuals who meet the disability requirements, who are under 65 years of age, and have paid a certain sum of Social Security taxes for a determined number of quarterly periods.

Total disability

The insured’s inability to perform essential duties of their occupation or any other occupation for which they are reasonably capable according to their education, training, or experience.

Disability (Cancer Policy)

The insured’s inability to perform important duties of their occupation due to some type of cancer or critical illness, as defined in the policy, provided said disability entails loss of wages and not being employed in a paid occupation of any kind. The insured will not be considered as having suffered loss of wages if they are entitled to receive wages for vacation and/or sick leave. If the insured is receiving State Insurance Fund benefits, the monthly benefit payable will be limited to a maximum of two hundred fifty dollars or half the monthly benefit acquired, whichever is less. During any disability period, the insured must be under the regular care of an authorized physician.

Hospital

Legally established institution that keeps and regularly uses laboratories, X Ray equipment, and an operating room in its premises to conduct surgical interventions, maintains the patient’s written history and medical records in its premises, as well as care facilities for full-time resident patients under the supervision of a physician with permanent license to practice medicine, and which provides 24-hour graduate registered nurse services.

Warranty

A statement made by a contracting party that will void the contract if it is not literally true.

Policy form

A type of standardized contract that presents the terms, conditions, benefits, and rights of the policyholder for a particular insurance product.

Malaria

A parasitic disease involving high fevers, chills, flu-like symptoms, and anemia. It spreads from person to person and through infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Transmission of malaria may also occur congenitally (from the mother to the fetus) or through blood transfusions.

Typhoid fever

A bacterial infection characterized by diarrhea, systemic disease, and cutaneous eruptions, caused most commonly by the Salmonella Typhi bacteria (via contaminated food, water, and drinks).
